Problem
Mwambezi village is located 12 km from south of Mbala town in Northern Province of the Republic of Zambia. When people first established this village back in the 1960s the place was full of trees and green all around. Over the years more people have settled in the village and demand for firewood and farming land has increased resulting in total depletion of trees. Further, due to depletion of trees up the watershed, there is too much soil erosion that ends up in the stream. The water is no longer safe.
Solution
Strategically planting trees around the village and particularly over the watershed will help regain and maintain a sustainable environment preventing soil erosion and land degradation.
Goals
- To prevent land degradation and protect the soil against erosion
- To improve the quality of water in the Mwambezi stream
- To create biodiversity of the natural environment around Mwambezi stream
- To protect the people of Mwambezi village against poverty due to lack of adequate supply of safe water
- To empower the people with economical trees such as Moringa, Macadania nut trees and eucalyptus lumber trees.
- To build community and promote environmental stewardship
Anticipated Impact
- Improved safety of water supply
- Clean watershed environment
- Soil stability
