LOW-COST HOUSING PROJECT

FOR MWAMBEZI VILLAGE

Imagine living in a house that leaks when it rains or risks to fall when it floods. This is the case for the people of Mwambezi village.

    Problem Summary

    Mwambezi village is located 12 km south of Mbala town in Northern Province of the Republic of Zambia, Africa. Mbala region has the highest and most intense rainfall in the country. In as much as many people look at rain as a blessing it also poses a challenge to residents, particularly single women. People live in traditional mud houses with grass thatched roofs. By today's development standard and desired quality of life the quality of homes and thatched roofs is very poor so that the homes are not enduring. This is even more serious when the thatched roofs happen to leak. 

    The Solution

    Improving housing for Mwambezi village people especially single women by building low-cost enviromentally friendly houses out burnt brick and iron sheet roofing.

    Low-Cost Housing Project Goals

    1. To eradicate poverty by constructing enduring houses
    2. To eradicate poverty by providing quality shelter especially for sngle women
    3. To eradicate poverty by building low-cost houses using enviromentally friendly materials
    4. To eradicate poverty by involving peolple in low-cost house development

    Project Activities

    • Develop project plan
    • Develop achitectural drawings
    • Mobilize the people of the village to participate in building low-cost houses
    • Implemet fundraising plan for the project
    • Identify building contractor
    • Kick-off construction of low-cost houses
    • Monitor construction progress and provide reports

    Budget

    The budget for ten low-cost houses is $140 000.
